It seems to me entirely inexplicable that it's at all possible to not care about other people. And yet...
The first thing we learn as humans is to cry. The first thing a species learns to do is the fundamental capability of that species. For us, it's crying. It happens right as we are born. Crying is a sign for help. Because our fundamental capability is cooperating. It's how civilization works.
