There is no such thing as self sufficiency. Independence is a myth. Literally no human being in the history of our species has ever been independent, and no human could be. It's not possible, and is an awful goal you should not strive towards anyway. You come out of the womb crying because learning to ask for help is the most important skill you will ever learn. You didn't build the house you live in, you don't grow the food you eat, and you didn't sow your own clothes. You were raised to speak the language of your people, by your people. You learnt how to navigate the world through other people. You cannot be independent. Even if in the extreme hypothetical mountain hermit man, maybe you've decided from this point on, with everything now ready, I can live as an independent person. But you don't pollinate the crops you grow, or make the paper you write on. You will not grow the trees you use for wood, or acquire the gasoline in your car, the solar panels on your roof.
You're part of an ecosystem whether you like it or not, and there is no escape. You cannot be independent. By all means, become competent and reliable. Be confident and able to resolve your problems. But do not mistake your part in the process for the process itself. There is no such thing as Independence, and it's important to remember that.
A much better north star is to be inter-dependent. Rely on your friends and family. Uplift them, as they uplift you. Give your time to strangers in your city. Ask your neighbours for salt or to water the plants, and return the favor. Do be poisoned by the independence mindset and accumulate endlessly what "you earned". Share recklessly with everyone, and you will see abundance in your own life.
