data analysis and experimental thinking

some boring statistics stuff:

  • uni/bi/multi variate data
  • types of data: nominal, numerical, etc
  • populations vs samples
  • parameter vs statistic
  • summary statistics: mean, mode, etc
  • using tables, plots to explain data, and how it can be misleading

important questions when understanding the distribution of numerical data:

  • what is the range of the data
  • what is the central tendency
  • how spread out are the values

central tendency = most common: mean, median, mode variability = a single value to measure internal variation of data; range, variation, standard deviation other stats = five number summary

now we talk about different graphs

  • histogram
  • density plot
  • box plot

bivariate data

  • contingency tables = tables with 2 variables
  • t-test
